We got a chance to catch up with our chair, Jolel Miah who recently was honoured by the University of Bedfordshire and received the HM Lord Lieutenant Community engagement award.
This prestige award was handed out by the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire who recognised Jolel’s commitment and effort to bring behavioural science into Luton and surrounding areas. There were a number of unique candidates who were nominated for this award but as the video of Jolel’s achievements that watched by the onlooking crowd who gave a gracious applause, it was no surprise he was the winner.
The nominees stated in the video Jolel not only started this charity with group of friends and colleagues but he has influenced service providers, commissioners, politicians and service users to think carefully about health care and work closely with the charity to help reduce suicide and mental illness. Jolel has also achieved this whilst holding down employment, doing a PhD and being a carer.
When we interviewed him recently, Jolel said “ it was a really pleasant surprise when my name and video came up on screen as winner, I did not expect it one bit!” He then added “work with people who want to work with you and share similar values. The people I work with , i have learnt so much from and this has helped the charity, of course we have a long way to go but working with people is the best bit!,
We also asked about his other roles he carries across varies settings “ Jolel said, working part time allows me lots of flexibility to work in different settings and people with creative ideas, I deliver behaviour change advice in clinics for Hertfordshire County Council, I also promote the application of Psychology in Public Health for a national group and also a run small project with a few others on the science behind mobile phone apps” The only negative thing , is that sometimes you have to say no to some really interesting work, but hey you got to look after yourself”
